Stem-cell research has shown great promise in treating a variety of diseases including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, and muscle damage. However the process of human embryonic stem cell research requires the destruction of human embryos.
Opponents of embryonic stem-cell research argue that an embryo is a human being, and thus it is immoral to destroy it. Also, there are alternatives such as adult stem-cells.
Supporters of embryonic stem-cell research cite the great potential of this research for mankind. Moreover, embryonic stem cells used for research are derived from excess embryos left over in the process of in vitro fertilization and would have been destroyed anyway.
