There are three main stands on the issue of same-sex marriage. First, fully support and constitutionally recognize same-sex marriage, granting same-sex couples all the rights and privileges of heterosexual couples. Second, oppose same-sex marriage but support civil unions and legal rights and privileges enjoyed by heterosexual couples. Third, oppose same-sex marriage and place a constitutional ban on them by defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
Opponents of same-sex marriage argue that same-sex marriage can damage traditional family unions and create weaker families. They further argue that America needs a thriving young generation and since same-sex couples cannot procreate without external intervention, it will hurt the nation. Some opponents base their arguments on religious reasons as well.
Supporters of same-sex marriages state that marriage is a fundamental civil right and the government has no right to deny this right to same-sex partners.
